Growing potential for umbilical cord stem cells

Exciting development is to develop opportunities for umbilical cord stem cells, in accordance with article, published in November 2009, the opinion of an expert in biological therapy. This article discusses the development of carlecortemcel-l (brand of StemEx), strains of umbilical cord blood stem cells created by encouraging the proliferation of stem cells – without allowing to distinguish.

What does this mean and why is it important?

Although there is much evidence of the healing potential of stem cells extracted from the umbilical cord blood, it was claimed that a limited number of stem cells available from one unit of the banked is not sufficient for the treatment of patients other than children or adults is very small. Creating a method of multiplying these stem cells in their vital State of a pre-differentiated, researchers may potentially face this challenge and widen the application of multiple stem cell treatments.

The results of the phase I study carlecortemcel-l performed at the University of Texas m. d. Anderson Cancer Center reported in the article, suggest that the surcharges these stem cells enlarged umbilical cord is safe – and may be beneficial for adults and adolescents with leukemia and Lymphoma. The continuation phase II/III safety and efficacy studies named Are now registering youth and adults with a high risk of hematologic malignancies in clinical trials in the United States, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Israel. Gamida cell and Teva Pharmaceuticals, co-developers StemEx, predict the product officially reaching cabinets 2011.

Banked Cord Blood saves lives

At NECBB, we believe the Cord Blood has unlimited possibilities – it is proven time and again that is expressible by stories that we receive from our customers. Only during the holidays, our founders, John and Cathy Rizza, received a letter from Leighsa m. Leighsa infant daughter Cameron was diagnosed with anemia, a rare blood, can be fatal: the doctors did not expect her to live in the past, birthday 10.

The daughter of the scientist and researcher, Leighsa believed the potential power cord Blood to treat a variety of disorders, including her daughter. Later gave birth to two boys and the Maldives their Blood cord with NECBB. One of the boys: Davis, was a match 6/6 tissue for his sister. In 2007, Cameron on the disease had progressed to the point where it was necessary to not overdo it and doctors were able to use the cord blood of her brother.

Show was a success and almost 3 years later, Cameron is now a happy and healthy eleventh summer.

Stories of such points out Why we do what we can do on NECBB. While science is exciting and brings the constant discovery of new ways to treat disease with Cord Blood, history of Cameron's is where little life was Touched and saved due to Cord Blood – inspires and motivates us to continue in our mission to provide these treatments of the families when needed.

Business Cards Today Show NDPL and families hope for dental pulp

NBC today airing the segment now has our national laboratory dental pulp (NDPL) and family, the Maldives their daughter dental pulp with us. Dental pulp is in baby teeth (and other) and provides opportunities for the treatment of many-including type 1 diabetes.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), the stem cells found in the flesh of the dental, you can differentiate into other types of cells, such as cells of the heart and muscles. Studies on animals showed great progress in regeneration of the teeth with dental pulp cells and human trials are not far behind.

The family ensured Today Show viewers that their decision the Bank from pulp dental their daughter was informed one and feel the investment in their daughter prosperity. We are proud of the fact that we can provide detailed information about the dental pulp of banking families and counsel them himself, before taking a decision.

Cancer Center expands opportunities for stem cells cord blood

Happy to report another step on the road to blood, umbilical cord!  This month, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Washington announced that have been successfully treating leukemia with the aid of blood, umbilical cord that has been manipulated in the laboratory to increase the number of useful stem cells.  The results of the phase I study Center have been published in the January 2010 issue of Nature Medicine.

The Problem inherent with using Cord Blood in the treatment of leukemia injection is a relatively small number of stem cells in the standard cord blood samples; Therefore, to date, has the greatest potential of Cord Blood has been limited to children or small adults.  The ability to expand the number of stem cells in Cord Blood, however, comes the expanded treatment options in the greater part of the population.

Results from studies Hutch 10 Leukemia patients show that aid blood stem cells extended the cord is not only safe, but also effectively cut the time to engraftment by half compared to the stem cells of the blood-manipulate the cord.  Motto: faster engraftment takes place, the better a patient's chance of survival.   Seven study 10 patients are still alive today and show no signs of disease.

Cord blood is still a promising alternative to bone marrow transplant, are less susceptible to "graft vs. host disease and other complications for the recipient of the rejection of foreign cells, and do not require a perfect donor.  In the previous blog entry, we reported on a similar process extension cord blood stem cell population, using the carlecortemcel-l (aka StemEx), published by the University of Texas m. d. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.  While the need for supplementary studies in order to fully realise the results of constant news of these events is encouraging and exciting – both to us at NECBB, and for families, have Blood cord in the future.

Reprogramming stem cells cord blood

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have been in the news a bit late, especially with the report on Chinese summer two studies indicating that stem cells created from adult mouse skin cells have the ability to regenerate in a similar way as embryonic stem cells obtained in both cases in the birth of a baby mouse.

It look like the cord blood cells can be determined in a similar way as adult stem cells in these tests is, but with a smaller number of factors and in less time, according to Juan Carlos Izpisúa Belmonte, Ph.d., a professor in the laboratory of expression of the gene Institute Salk, who led his own study published in the October journal stem cells cells.

This accepts the message, some wind from sails one argument against using his own stem cells in cord blood of Maldives to treat diseases: that stem cells may contain the same genetic mutation or suffer a mutation that caused the disease in the first place. Reprogramming stem cells cord blood, however, researchers may potentially remove the capabilities of this ever happening.

The first study of people using dental stems published

We are thrilled the report exciting development research of stem cells: the first test people using dental stem cells was released on 12 November in the journal European cells and materials! It's a wonderful message for our dental pulp national laboratory that maintains the dental stem cells and has long believed in its potential for future use.

In studies of patients had wisdom teeth that were the impact that caused the loss of bone (resorption) on the impaction. Because the defects of the bones would not repair itself after teeth of wisdom have been removed, the researchers applied a mixture of dental pulp stem cells harvested from the patient uniaxial, the upper teeth of wisdom and you place them on made of collagen sponge "scaffold". This mixture is then used to fill in the areas affected, which remained at impact teeth were removed from the lower jaw. (Area of the upper jaw served as a control area or comparison — not dental stem cells were used).

Three months after treatment, the bone was completely regenerate the site of injury and periodontal tissues have been restored. Optimal bone regeneration was seen in seven patients who returned for follow-up. Researchers found that the clinical research shows that dental stem cells and collagen Sponge scaffold completely you can restore bone defects of human jaw and indicates that these cells have the potential to repair or reconstruct tissues and organs

Previously, JAWS defects have been repaired using dental stem cells in animal model — never in humans. In fact, not therapy dental stem cells have ever been shown in humans. As you can guess, this bone grafting research is very exciting for all of us who believe in the future of promise dental stem cell therapy — whether dental stem cell banking facility as our own NDPL, or people who want to keep their own or their children's pulp is a source of stem cells, which could be placed on the future needs of the medical.

Still the potential Prochymal?

Disappointing is the news today that Prochymal, Osirus Therapeutics mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) therapy, failed in late stage clinical trials in acute Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). GvHD is a serious difficulty that occurs in some people who received bone marrow from a donor. If the tests were successful, would probably be the first commercial product Prochymal stem cells, approved by the FDA.

However, there are still grounds for hope. First, in one of the trials of GvHD patients with GvHD affecting their liver or gastrointestinal tract, who did not respond to steroid treatment appeared to benefit from Prochymal, although results are still preliminary. In addition, Prochymal is still currently being tested in human trials for several other indications, including type 1 diabetes, heart attack, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The same kind of stem cells used for Prochymal as MSCs – are also in the dental pulp, currently extracted, privately held for families through our national laboratory of the dental pulp. We and many others will continue to track the news and hope for the best as possible stem cell treatment is tested in these areas.
