Cancer Center expands opportunities for stem cells cord blood

Happy to report another step on the road to blood, umbilical cord!  This month, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Washington announced that have been successfully treating leukemia with the aid of blood, umbilical cord that has been manipulated in the laboratory to increase the number of useful stem cells.  The results of the phase I study Center have been published in the January 2010 issue of Nature Medicine.

The Problem inherent with using Cord Blood in the treatment of leukemia injection is a relatively small number of stem cells in the standard cord blood samples; Therefore, to date, has the greatest potential of Cord Blood has been limited to children or small adults.  The ability to expand the number of stem cells in Cord Blood, however, comes the expanded treatment options in the greater part of the population.

Results from studies Hutch 10 Leukemia patients show that aid blood stem cells extended the cord is not only safe, but also effectively cut the time to engraftment by half compared to the stem cells of the blood-manipulate the cord.  Motto: faster engraftment takes place, the better a patient's chance of survival.   Seven study 10 patients are still alive today and show no signs of disease.

Cord blood is still a promising alternative to bone marrow transplant, are less susceptible to "graft vs. host disease and other complications for the recipient of the rejection of foreign cells, and do not require a perfect donor.  In the previous blog entry, we reported on a similar process extension cord blood stem cell population, using the carlecortemcel-l (aka StemEx), published by the University of Texas m. d. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.  While the need for supplementary studies in order to fully realise the results of constant news of these events is encouraging and exciting – both to us at NECBB, and for families, have Blood cord in the future.
